FAQs

Expensive is a word that is relative to us all. We think that private dentists offer great value for money though.

Whether you go NHS or private you will have to pay. There are only some people who are exempt from paying NHS dental charges.
The difference is that, yes, at a private dentist you will ultimately pay more but we are far less inundated and are much more able to properly help and really hear you.

This is not to say that NHS dentists do not provide proper treatment but from what we understand they just do not have appointments available as often as they would like.
Luckily we are a great option, we actually offer a variety of payment plans to make sorting out all aspects of your treatment as stress-free as possible. Many private dentists offer these types of payment plans as they are an essential way to help you get the care you need without breaking the bank.

Everybody should have access to equal dental care!
We are also fortunate that because the nature of the pressure on our system is not like that of the NHS we can take the time to be more attentive to your needs. Just check out our ‘Treatments’ page and go down to ‘Nervous patients’ to see just some of the ways we can assuage your worries.

Here at Didsbury Dental Practice we only take on private patients.

There are so many practices across the country and here in Manchester, however, that can offer you both NHS and private appointments.

You should make sure that you have a good understanding of what the differences are between the two types of services, why each one is great and what will suit you best.

The easiest way to find out if the dental practice that you are looking at visiting looks after both NHS and private patients is to check their website. You can also search them on the NHS database which contains all NHS dental practices.

Just like NHS dental practices, private dental practices also sometimes have waiting lists. You should make sure that you confirm that your practice is taking on new patients in the foreseeable future.

We at Didsbury Dental Practice are of the firm conviction that committing to a private dentist will have long-term benefits for every patient’s oral health and overall health and well-being.

There is a multitude of benefits to using a private dentist:

  • Shorter waiting times for an appointment.
  • Greater flexibility for appointment times (e.g. during evenings, weekends, and outside of 9-5 office hours.)
  • Greater flexibility for emergency treatment.
  • Private dentists can generally offer more time with patients, which is beneficial for treating immediate problems and preventing any future issues.
  • Better quality of care, as there are no funding restrictions.
  • More treatment options (e.g. orthodontic work, Invisalign or teeth whitening).

Many people switch from an NHS dentist to a private dentist, because they have moved house, because they are unhappy with the care provided, or because they wish to be seen by a different dentist.

You can register for a private dentist by calling them and asking them if they are taking on new, private patients. If they are, then you will be able to register with them.

Before you register with a private dentist, you should inform your NHS dentist that you will be moving to another dental practice. Make sure you have cancelled any upcoming appointments and finished paying for any treatments.

Your new dentist can ask your previous dentist for your dental records, so they can understand what your care needs are.

If you want to join a new NHS dentist, then there is likely to be a long waiting list, so you may have to wait months to be seen.

There is a shortage of dentists, a shortage of NHS dental practices, and a shortage of funding for them.

In fact, the British Dental Association estimates that it would take an additional £880 million a year, simply to restore funding to 2010 levels.

Additionally, there are long waiting lists for new patients to join a dental practice, so people are being turned away, which is leaving tens of thousands of adults and children with no access to dental care. The Covid-19 pandemic has exacerbated the problem, as it has delayed dental treatments and placed enormous pressure on emergency services.

All of these issues mean that people are not getting the help and care they need, especially if they are suffering from a tooth problem such as gingivitis.
