DENTAL CROWNS AND BRIDGES, ENCHANCE YOUR SMILE WITH CROWNS & BRIDGES

Crown and bridgework at Didsbury Dental Practice, Manchester

The purpose of dental crowns and bridges is to enhance your smile with health and vitality. When a lost tooth is replaced with bridgework, the teeth on either side of the missing one must be prepared as crowns to serve as abutments to hold the bridge in place.

While restoring missing teeth bridges help to support remaining teeth and keep them in their proper position. Bridges are a long-term solution which can help prevent the cycle of problems that occur when just one tooth is missing, such as shifting and drifting of remaining teeth, decay and periodontal bone loss. Unlike dentures, a bridge is not removable, giving increased support and stability within the mouth.

A crown or ‘cap’ is used to completely cover a damaged tooth and may be used for aesthetic or functional reasons to restore it to its natural colour, shape and strength. Besides strengthening a severely broken down tooth, crowns can also be used to improve the appearance, shape and alignment of teeth. Crowns are often used to strengthen root canal-treated teeth as these teeth are more brittle and likely to fracture. Crowns may also be used in cases of large irritable fillings, aging teeth or improper bite due to excessive grinding of teeth.

What are my options with Crowns & Bridges?

There are three types of crowns that can be placed:

All gold crowns which are the strongest, but are the least aesthetic and best used on back teeth.

Porcelain bonded to metal crowns that are aesthetic, but very opaque looking.

All porcelain CEREC® crowns that are the most aesthetic and durable option because of their rigid makeup and lifelike appearance. CEREC® crowns can be fitted in just one appointment in a single day!
